Braemar: Sat, 26th May 2012 - Wed, 30th May 2012

---This event has now closed for booking---

This is a week based on the Mar Lodge Estate four miles west of Braemar on the southern edge of the Cairngorm mountains. For Munro-baggers there are several Munros to the north accessible from the nearby Linn of Dee the Glen Shee area to the south and the Lochnagar area to the south-east. And for non-Munro-baggers there are plenty of lower walking opportunities. There is an option to hire mountain bikes to make the mountains in the area more accessible.
Accommodation is the very spacious comfortable and well-equipped Mar Lodge Base Camp the best Base Camp that weve ever used. Facilities include a very large kitchen dining room sitting room four bedrooms toilets/showers and a drying room. The cost of the trip will be 70 accommodation assuming at least 6 places taken + food + share of car hire by non-car owners if required + travel up to Scotland.
Hiring a mountain bike for five days is highly recommended for easier access to the mountains. This is easy mountain biking along generally good vehicle tracks no rough stuff. Bike hire will be 55. Please indicate on your form whether you wish to hire a bike.
This trip may be combined with the week on the Isle of Mull. Some lifts will be available from Braemar to Mull on Friday 1st June.

There are lots of Munros within reach including the Five Sisters of Kintail and the seven along the South Glen Shiel Ridge while for non-Munro baggers or for less clement days there are plenty of lower level walking opportunities.
Accommodation is the self-catering lodge sleeping eight that Ibex used last May. The lodge is 10 minutes walk from the centre of Dornie which is accessible by bus from Inverness Kyle of Lochalsh or Fort William. The lodge is a spacious new construction with underfloor heating and extensive use of glass giving good views of the loch. There are four twin/double bedrooms.

Traversée du Mercantour Est: Fri, 22nd Jun 2012 - Fri, 29th Jun 2012

The Parc National du Mercantour has it all: rugged peaks deep gorges alpine meadows lakes forests Bronze Age engravings as well as a rich arrray of fauna including Ibex of the four legged variety. This long narrow park created in 1979 extends for 80 km South East from the town of Barcelonette to the road across Col du Tende into Italy. Its northern limits partly share the Italian border which this traversée will cross on days 2 and 3.
The six walking days will take us from the ski resort of Isola 2000 partly reachable by public transport from Nice with the last 17 km by taxi to the small town of St Dalmas de Tende which is conveniently located on a SNCF line with frequent trains to Nice. Most of the way is along the GR52 or its variants. We will be carrying our rucksacks and staying in CAF and CAI refuges most nights these provide beds food and drink. The scenery will be nothing short of stunning the weather should be at its best and the food even in the refuges is guaranteed to be absolutely scrumptious. Walking will be between four and six hours per day on undulating occasionally steep rocky paths maximum daily ascent is 940m on day 3 longest descent is a whopping 1430m on day 6. In terms of difficulty the trip can be described as on the whole relatively moderate with quite strenuous bits in between.
If you are interested please send me Diane an email between 27th November and 20th December as I will be away before and after those dates. I will then send you more info and ask you for a deposit of 150. Please note that you will have to book your own transport to and from Nice best done as early as possible.
Approximate cost: 350 euros. This covers all the transfers accommodation and food not the drinks but wine is cheap in that part of the world. To this one should add the cost of transport to and from Nice about 100.00 for an EasyJet flight if booked very early.

Dartmoor: Fri, 22nd Jun 2012 - Sun, 24th Jun 2012

Spend the longest weekend of the year with David and Susan exploring the beautiful South Devon coastal path. Only 10 miles away from the bunkhouse walking opportunities along the coast are numerous. And then there are lots of beaches for swimming/sunbathing and places for Devonshire cream teas Alternatively if you are after some rugged walking you can walk from the bunkhouse and very soon be on Dartmoor.
Our accommodation is Harford Bunkhouse situated on the southern edge of Dartmoor. We are in the main part of the bunkhouse which is comfortable and has good facilities. For those wishing to travel by train there is easy access from London Paddington to Ivybridge just a couple of miles from the bunkhouse. Pickups from Ivybridge to the bunkhouse will be available.

Day Walk: possibly a night walk: Sun, 8th Jul 2012

Details to be advised. The idea is that we either have a straightforward dusk-to-dawn walk or a night-nav exercise. At the mo we think the former is more likely. And we may consider this time of year doesnt have enough night so it may move later in the year. Watch this space for clarification when we know what we are doing.

Weardale, North Pennines: Fri, 13th Jul 2012 - Sun, 15th Jul 2012

If you want to get away from it all Weardale is for you the north Pennines Britains second largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is one of the most remote and unspoilt places in the country often described as Englands last wilderness.
Our bunkhouse a converted 17th century barn with we are promised luxurious sleeping and dining areas is just outside Wolsingham the ancient hunting base for Durhams Prince Bishops. Wild walking on offer every way you look as theres easy access to the upper reaches of both the Wear and the Tees with its famous waterfalls of High Force and Cauldron Snout and stretches of both the Pennine and Weardale Ways. For a less rugged day there are delightful riverside walks and Hamsterley Forest on our doorstep.
The A1M takes you most of the way there with the last 15 miles mainly up the A68. For those who prefer trains there is a bus service from Durham on the Fridaybut no buses back on the Sunday though lifts to Darlington may be available depending on the number of cars/passengers.
Well aim to use the barbecue area on Saturday but the bunkhouse has full self-catering facilities in the unlikely ? event the weather drives us indoors.

For the non-climbing amongst us we are in the midst of the Snowdonia National Park with Snowdon itself a close neighbour.
